SWORD, James Brade, painter, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 11 October, 1839. His early life was spent in China, and he subsequently travelled extensively in the United States, sketching, and also in the service of the government surveys. During 1861-'2 he studied under Christian Schussele at the Pennsylvania academy. He has been president of the Philadelphia society of artists since 1878, and director of the art club since 1887. His works include "Quail Shooting," "Peep into Lake George," "Trenton Falls," "Silver-Thread Falls,"" Mystery of the Sea," and "Something in the Wind."
