SCOULLEK, James Brown, clergyman, born near Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, 12 July, 1820. He was graduated at Dickinson college in 1839, and at the Associate Reformed theological seminary, Alleghany, Pennsylvania, in 1842. He was successively pastor of the United Presbyterian churches in Philadelphia, Cuylersville, and Argyle, New York, in 1844-'62, and editor of the " Christian Instructor," Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1862-'3. Muskingum college, Concord, Ohio, gave him the degree of D.D. in 1880. He has contributed largely to magazines, and is the author of "History of the Big Spring Presbytery" (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 1879) ; "History of the Presbytery of Argyle" (1880); a " Manual of the Presbyterian Church" (1881); and "Calvinism, its History and Influences" (1885).
