COX, James, artist, born in England in 1751; died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1834. For many years he was the fashionable drawing-master in Philadelphia and did much to advance the fine arts. He made a remarkable collection of works on the fine arts, numbering over 5,000 volumes, which he sold, during the latter part of his life, to the Library company of Philadelphia, for an annuity of $400.
