OLIVER, James Edward, mathematician, born in Portland, Maine, 27 July, 1829. He was graduated at Harvard in 1849, and at once appointed assistant in the office of the "American Nautical Almanac." In 1871 he became assistant professor of mathematics at Cornell, and two years later he was given full possession of the chair. Professor Oliver has been elected to membership in the American academy of arts and sciences, in the American philosophical society, and in 1872 was chosen to the National academy of sciences. He has published "A Treatise on Trigonometry" (New York, 1886).
