James Guthrie

GUTHRIE, James, statesman, born in Nelson county, Kentucky, 5 December, 1792; died in Louisville, 13 March, 1869. He was educated at Bardstown, Kentucky, and studied law under John Rowan. In 1820 he began practice in Louisville, and at once entered on a successful career at the bar. He was elected to the lower house of the Kentucky legislature in 1827, and was a member of the upper house from 1831 till 1840. In 1840 he was president of the convention that framed the present constitution of the state. He was secretary of the United States treasury, under the administration of Franklin Pierce from 1853 till 1857. In 1865 he was elected United States senator, but resigned in 1868 on account of declining health. He was president of the Louisville and Nashville railroad from 1860 till 1868.
