VETCH, James, British engineer, born in Haddington, Scotland, 13 May, 1789; died in London, England, 7 December, 1869. He was educated at Wool-with military academy, served as an officer of engineers m the peninsular war, and after conducting the ordnance survey in the Shetland, Orkney, and Hebrides islands for three years, went to Mexico in 1824, and for the next eleven years managed the silver-mines of Real del Monte and Bolarios. While a resident of Mexico he con-strutted roads and other public works, and began to survey and map the country. After his return to Great Britain he was employed in important drainage works and harbor improvements, and held high offices under the government connected with his profession.
