HUSTED, James William, politician, born in Bedford, Westchester County, New York, 31 October, 1833. He was graduated at Yale in 1854, and admitted to the bar in 1857. He was school-commissioner of Westchester county in 1858-'60, deputy superintendent of the State insurance department in 1860-'2, harbor-master of the port of New York in 1862-'70, and state commissioner of emigration in 1870-'72. He has been for many years a member and also speaker of the assembly. In 1873 he was appointed major-general of the National guard of the state of New York, which office he still holds. He was president of the New York state military association in 1875-'6, and is popularly known as the "Bald Eagle of Westchester."
