MAGENS, Joachim Melchior (mah-gains'), Danish author, born in St. Thomas, Wisconsin, about 1715" died there in 1783. When he was young his parents sent him to Copenhagen, Denmark, and there he studied law in the university. The Danish government appointed him chief of the administration of St. Thomas, which place he held until his death. He was the first author that wrote in the Creole language. His works include "Grammaire de la langue creole parlee dans les Antilles danoises" (Copenhagen, 1770), and "Nouveau Testament traduit en creole" (1781).
