John A. Koltes

KOLTES, John A., soldier, born in Rhenish Prussia in 1823; died near Gainesville, Virginia, 30 August, 1862. He came to this country in 1846, and served throughout the Mexican war as orderly sergeant, . After its close he became an officer of the marine corps, and was subsequently employed in the United States mint in Philadelphia. At the opening of the civil war he raised and commanded a regiment of Germans. He was killed at the battle of Gainesville, Vao He had been acting brigadier-general in General Adolph Von Steinwehr's division for four months, and his friends who had secured his promotion to this rank were carrying his commission, when they met his body as it was borne from the battle-field.
