CAMPBELL, John, surgeon, born in New York state about 1822. He was appointed an assistant surgeon in the United States army in December, 1847, served in Mexico, and was stationed successively in Texas, in California, at forts along the western frontier, and at different eastern posts, including the military academy at West Point. He was promoted surgeon in May, 1861, acting through the civil war in that grade, and at its close received brevets of lieutenant colonel and colonel, United States A., for faithful and meritorious services. He was advanced to the full rank of lieutenant colonel, 8 November, 1877, colonel, 7 December, 1885, and placed on the retired list, 16 September, 1885.
