DAWSON, John, statesman, born in Virginia in 1762; died in Washington, D. C., 30 March 1814. He was graduated at Harvard in 1782, studied law, and was admitted to the bar. He was a presidential elector on the Washington ticket in 1793, a member of the Virginia legislature, and a representative of congress from Virginia for nine consecutive terms, serving from 15 May 1797, till 30 March 1814. He was bearer of dispatches from President Adams to France in 1801, and in the war of 1812'5 was one of General Jackson's aides.
