John Dayton

DAYTON, John, jurist, born in 1762; died in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1822. After holding several subordinate stations he was elected governor of South Carolina in 1800, and reelected in 1808. He afterward became a judge of the U. S. district court of South Carolina, and held that office until his death, He published "A View of South Carolina," and "Memoirs of the Revolution," in that state.
