FAIRFIELD, John, senator, born in Saco, Maine, 30 January 1797; died in Washington, D. C., 24 December 1847. He received a common-school education, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1826, and practiced successfully in his native town. He was appointed reporter of the state Supreme Court in 1832, and was then elected to congress as a Democrat, serving from 7 December 1835, to 3 March, 1839. He was governor of Maine in 1839-'40, and again, in 1842, was chosen United States senator from Maine, in place of Reuel Williams, resigned, and served from 4 December 1843, till his death. He was the author of " Supreme Court Reports" (Augusta, 1835-'7).
