HODGE, John (hoag), member of congress, born near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 10 September, 1760; died near Washington, Pennsylvania, 4 August, 1824. He was educated privately, and, entering the Revolutionary army in 1776, was made an ensign of the 9th Pennsylvania regiment. In 1782 he removed to the western part of the state, and with his brother William founded the town of Washington. He was in 1789 a delegate to the convention that formed the state constitution, and from 1790 till 1795 was in the state senate. In 1799 he was elected a member of the "American philosophical society," and was a representative in congress from Pennsylvania in 1804 and 1805, for the unexpired term of his brother William.--His brother, William, born in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, in 1762; died in Washington, Pennsylvania, 25 September, 1814, was a representative in congress from Pennsylvania from 1801 till 1804, when he resigned, and again from 1807 till 1809.
