KIRKPATRICK, John Lycan, clergyman, born in Mecklenburg county, North Carolina, 20 January, 1813; died in Lexington, Virginia, 24 June, 1885. He was graduated at Hampden Sidney college in 1832, and after teaching two years entered Union theological seminary, New York city. He was licensed to preach in 1837, and installed pastor of the 2d Presbyterian church of Lynchburg, Virginia In 1841 he accepted a call from Gainesville, Alabama, and in 1853 from Charleston, South Carolina During this pastorate he was for four years editor of the "Southern Presbyterian." In 1861 he became president of Davidson college, North Carolina, and in 1866 he was elected to the chair of moral philosophy in Washington college, Lexington, Virginia, under the presidency of General Robert E. Lee. Dr. Kirkpatrick was the moderator of the general assembly of 1862. He was for many years a member of the board of trustees of Union theological seminary.
