MOREHEAD, John Motley, governor of North Carolina, born in Pittsylvania county, Virginia, 4 July, 1796; died in Rockbridge Alum Springs, Virginia, 28 August, 1866. He was graduated at the University of North Carolina in 1817, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1819, and acquired a large practice. He served in the North Carolina legislature, and early became a Whig, being a warm friend of Henry Clay. From 1841 till 1845 he was governor of North Carolina. In 1848 he was president of the National Whig convention that nominated General Zachary Taylor for president.
