MUNROE, John, soldier, born in Scotland about 1796; died in New Brunswick, New Jersey, 26 April, 1861. He was graduated at the United States military academy in 1814, and entered the army as 3d lieutenant in the 1st artillery. He became captain, 2 March, 1825, was brevetted major, 15 February, 1838, for services against the Florida Indians, and became major of the 2d artillery, 18 August, 1846. He was chief of artillery to Gem Zachary Taylor in July, 1846, brevetted lieutenant-colonel for gallantry at Monterey, and colonel for Buena Vista. He was military and civil governor of New Mexico from October, 1849, till 1850, and was promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1856.
