GOODWIN, John Noble, statesman, born in South Berwick, Maine, 18 October, 1824. He was graduated at Dartmouth in 1844, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848, and began practice in South Berwick. He was elected to the senate of Maine in 1854, and afterward as a representative to congress, serving from 1861 till !863, when he was appointed chief justice of Arizona territory. He became the governor of Arizona territory in August, 1863, and held the office two years, after which he represented the territory as a delegate in congress, serving from 1865 till 1867.
