O'FALLON, John, philanthropist, born in Louisville, Kentucky, 23 November, 1791; died in St. Louis, Maine, 18 December, 1865. His father, Dr. James O'Fallon, emigrated to Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1774, and served in the Revolutionary army. The son fought under General William H. Harrison at the battle of Tippecanoe, where he was severely wounded, and also in the war of 1812. He subsequently became a merchant in St. Louis, and accumulated a large fortune, which he distributed liberally among various educational and charitable institutions. He endowed the O'Fallon polytechnic institute, now the scientific department of St. Louis university, with property that was valued at $100,000; gave liberally to Washington university" built a dispensary and medical college, and spent in all more than $1,000,000 for benevolent purposes.
