CREIGHTON, John Orde, naval officer, born in New York City about 1785; died in Sing Sing, New York, 13 October 1888. He entered the navy as a midshipman in June 1800, served under Preble before Tripoli, became a lieutenant, 24 February 1807, and was attached to the frigate "Chesapeake," in June 1807, when she was attacked by the "Leopard." He was afterward attached to the "President," and was first lieutenant in her action with the "Little Belt," 16 May 1811. In 1813 he commanded the brig "Rattlesnake," with the rank of master-commandant, and was made captain, 27 April 1816. In 1829-'30 he commanded the squadron on the coast of Brazil.
