POOL, John, senator born in Pasquotank county, North Carolina, 16 June, 1826 ;. died in Washington, D. C., 18 August, 1884. He was graduated at the University of North Carolina in 1847, and admitted to the bar in the same year. He was chosen to the state senate in 1856 and 1858, and in 1860 was the Whig candidate for governor of the state. After being returned to the state senate in 1864 as a peace candidate, and again in 1865, he was a member of the State constitutional convention of the latter year, and was chosen to the United States senate, but not admitted. In 1868 he was re-elected, and he then served till the expiration of his term in 1873.
