JONES, John Sills, soldier, born in Champaign county, Ohio, 12 February, 1836. He was graduated at Ohio Wesleyan university in 1855, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He was elected prosecuting attorney for Delaware county in 1860, but resigned in 1861, and enlisted as a private in the National army. He served with distinction throughout the war, rising to the colonelcy of the 174th Ohio regiment, and on 27 June, 1865, he was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. In 1866 he was elected mayor of Delaware, Ohio, and was prosecuting attorney of Delaware county, 1866-'71, when he declined renomination. He was a member of the board of managers of the Ohio soldiers' and sailors' orphans' home from 1870 till 1874, and was a trustee of Wesleyan female college at Delaware from 1865 till 1875. He was a presidential elector in 1872, and was afterward elected to congress as a Republican. serving from 15 October, 1877, till 4 March, 1879. He was elected a member of the legislature of Ohio in 1879, re-elected in 1881, and was chairman of the judiciary committee of the house. He became a trustee of the Ohio soldiers' and sailors' orphan home in 1887.
