HO0PER, Johnson J., lawyer, born in North Carolina about 1815; died in Alabama in 1863. At an early age he removed to Alabama, where he became solicitor of the 9th circuit, holding that office from 1849 till 1863. In 1861 he was secretary of the provisional Confederate congress. He also edited at one time a Whig journal, and published "Adventures of Captain Simon Suggs" (Philadelphia, 1845), and "Widow Rugby's Husband, and other Tales of Alabama" (1851).
