WILLIAMS, John Stuart, senator, born in Montgomery county, Kentucky, in 1820. He was graduated at Miami university, Oxford, Ohio, in 1838, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and engaged in practice at Paris, Kentucky He served in the war with Mexico, first as a captain and afterward as colonel, and was in command of the 4th Kentucky volunteers at the taking of the city of Mexico. After his return he resumed practice, and engaged in agriculture and the breeding of fine stock, took an active part as a, Whig in polities, served as a delegate to national conventions and as a presidential elector, and was in the legislature of Kentucky in 1851-'2. Although he had opposed secession, he raised a brigade for the Confederate army, received a commission as brigadier-general in 1862, and was serving under General Joseph E. Johnston when the surrender took place. Going back to his home, he urged the people to renew their allegiance to the National government, he served again in the legislature in 1873-'4, and was elected a United States senator from Kentucky as a Democrat, and served from 4 March, 1879, till 3 March, 1885. Since that time he has been engaged in farming, in improving lands in southern Florida, and in promoting railways in the mineral regions of Kentucky.
