JOHNSTON, John Taylor, capitalist, born in New York city, 8 April, 1820. He was graduated at the University of the city of New York in 1839, admitted to the bar in 1843, and in 1848 became president of the Central railroad of New Jersey, which office he still (1887) holds. His valuable collection of paintings was sold at auction in New York city, in December, 1876. Mr. Johnston is president of the council of the University of the city of New York, and of the Metropolitan museum of art in that city.
