DEAN, John Ward, author, born in Wiscasset, Maine, 13 March 1815. His youth was spent in Portland, Maine. From 1839 till 1843 he resided in Providence, R. I., and since then in and near Boston. He has filled for many years several offices in the New England genealogical society, to whose "Register" he has contributed valuable papers. Among the papers edited by him for the society is a curlous piece of ancient writing, "A Declaration of Remarkable Providences in the Course of My Life, by John Dane, of Ipswick, 1682." In May 1870, Mr. Dea, n was chosen president of the Prince society, of which he was one of the founders; and he has also been recording secretary of the American statistical association. He has accumulated an amount of historical knowledge such as few men possess. He has edited the first and a portion of the second volumes of the first series, and one number of the fourth volume of the second series, of the "Historical Magazine." He is the author of "Memoir of Rev. Nathaniel Ward," with notices of his family (Albany, 1868); and "Memoir of Rev. Michael Wigglesworth" (Albany, 1871); has published pamphlets, and has also edited the "New England Historical and Genealogical Register."
