CONCHA, Jose Gutierrez de la (coan'-cha), marquis of Havana, Spanish soldier, born in C6rdova, Argentine Republic, in 1809. He went to Spain very young, entered the army, fought against the revolutionary troops in South America, and afterward took part in the first Carlist war. In 1839 he was brevetted lieutenant-general, and afterward held the command of the Spanish cavalry. In 1850-'2 he was governor-general of Cuba. During this short administration occurred the invasion of the island by an expedition that sailed from the United States under command of General Narciso Lopez, who was defeated, captured, and executed in Havana, 1 September, 1851. A few days before, 14 August, fifty of his followers were shot. In 1854 Concha was again appointed governor-general of Cuba, which post he retained until 1859, when he returned to Spain, where he was appointed minister of war in 1863, and president of the senate in 1864. Queen Isabella appointed him prime minister just after the revolution broke out in Spain, 29 September, 1868. A third time he was appointed governor-general in 1874, in the midst of the Cuban insurrection; but his administration lasted only a few months. In 1886 he was elected president of the Spanish senate. General Concha has published "Ensayo sobre la Situaci6n Politica en Cuba" (1860); "Memoria sobre la guerra de Cuba" (1876); and memoirs of his first administration.
