CARDENAS Y RODRIGUEZ, Jose M. de, Cuban author, born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1812; died in 1882. He came to New York in 1834 to finish his studies, and returned to Cuba in 1837. He published "ColecciSn de Articulos," sketches of Cuban life and manners, written with grace and humor (Havana, 1847). Some of these sketches have been translated into French, and published in the "Revue des deux mondes." Cardenas wrote also a good comedy, "Un tio sordo," a collection of fables, and many light and graceful poems. Some of his fables have been translated into English.
