BLOOMFIELD, Joseph, soldier, born in Woodbridge, New Jersey ; died in Burlington, New Jersey, 3 October 1823. He studied law until the beginning of the war of independence, when he was made a captain in Dayton's regiment, the 3d New Jersey, in 1776, and served through the war, attaining the rank of major. He was subsequently admitted to the bar, and, after practicing for some time at Burlington, became attorney general of the state. He was governor of New Jersey in 1801-'12, was Brigadier-General during the war of 1812-'5, was a representative in congress during 1817-'21, and chairman of a committee on revolutionary pensions. He was a firm republican in politics, and a brave soldier.
