MANDRILLON, Joseph, author, born in Bourg, Prance, in 1743; died in Paris, 7 January, 1794. His parents intended him for a commercial career, and several years after the conclusion of his studies he came to this country with the object of establishing branches of a banking-house that he opened in Amsterdam on his return. He went to Paris at the beginning of the French revolution, joined the party of constitutional royalists, and, having been accused before the revolutionary tribunal, was condemned to death and guillotined. Among his more important works are "Le voyageur Americain, ou observations sur l'etat actuel, la culture et le commerce des colonies britanniques en Amerique" (Amsterdam, 1783), and "Le spectateur Americain, ou remarques general sur l'Amerique septentrionale" (1784; new ed., accompanied by "Recherches philosophiques" on the discovery of America, 1795).
