STANTON, Joseph, soldier, born in Charlestown, Rhode Island, 19 July, 1739; died there after 1807. He served as 2d lieutenant in the Rhode Island regiment that was raised for the expedition against Canada in 1759, was a member of the general assembly of Rhode Island from 1768 till 1774 and of the committee of safety in 1776, and a delegate to the State convention that adopted the constitution of the United States in 1790. He was elected a United States senator, as a Democrat, serving from 25 June, 1790, till 3 March, 1793, was again a member of the Rhode Island house of representatives, and was afterward chosen to congress, serving from 7 December, 1801, till 3 March, 1807.

Representative from Rhode Island; born in Charlestown, R.I., July 19, 1739;
served in the expedition against Canada in 1759; member, State house of
representatives 1768-1774; served as colonel in the Revolutionary Army; delegate
to the State constitutional convention in 1790; elected to the United States
Senate and served from June 7, 1790, to March 3, 1793; member, State house of
representatives 1794-1800; elected as a Republican to the Seventh, Eighth, and
Ninth Congresses (March 4, 1801-March 3, 1807); died in Charlestown, R.I., in
1807; interment in the family cemetery. ---
