BELLOT, Joseph Rene, explorer, born in Paris, France, in March 1826; lost on an ice-floe 18 August 1853. He was a midshipman at the siege of Vera Cruz in 1838, and rose to be a lieutenant in 1851. In 1852 he joined Belcher's English expedition to search for Franklin. While carrying dispatches over the ice he was overtaken by a storm, and the ice on which he stood was severed from the land. Leaving his two companions, he crossed a hummock to reconnoiter, and was never seen more. His diary, narrating his arctic adventures, was published in 1855.
