REYNOLDS, Joseph Smith, soldier, born in New Lenox, Illinois, 3 December, 1839. He went to Chicago in 1856, was graduated at its high-school in July, 1861, and in August of that year enlisted in the 64th Illinois regiment. He was commissioned 2d lieutenant on 31 December, and was in active service three years and ten months. He took part in seventeen battles, was wounded three times, and for "gallant and meritorious service" was promoted to a captaincy, subsequently to colonel. On 11 July, 1865, he was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He then began the study of law, was graduated at the law department of Chicago university in 1866, admitted to the bar, and has since practised his profession in Chicago. General Reynolds has been elected as representative and senator to the Illinois legislature, was a commissioner from Illinois to the Universal exposition at. Vienna in 1873, and has held other offices.
