MOULTON, Joseph White, historian, born in Stratford, Connecticut, in June, 1789 ; died in Roslyn, L. I., 20 April, 1875. His family removed to Troy, New York, where he studied law. After his admission to the bar he settled in Buffalo, New York He subsequently resided in New York city, and finally retired to Roslyn, where he devoted himself entirely to antiquarian and legal researches. He published, with John V. N. Yates, "A History of the State of New York," treating merely of the earlier period of its history (New York, 1824-'6); "Chancery Practice of New York " (3 vols., 1829-'32) ; " View of the City of New Orange as it was in 1673" (1849); and an annotated edition of John F. Mitford's "Treatise on Pleadings in the Court of Chancery " (1849).
