CLAYTON, Joshua, physician, died near Middletown, Del., 11 August, 1798. He practiced medicine for many years, and during the revolution introduced a substitute for Peruvian bark, consisting of equal parts of poplar and dogwood root bark and half the quantity of the inner bark of the white oak. Dr. Clayton was president of Delaware from 1789 till 1793, then governor till 1796, and just before his death was chosen United States senator.
