BODMER, Karl, artist, born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1805. He traveled in America in 1832-'4 with Maximilian, prince of Wied, and executed the copper-plates in the atlas accompanying the letter's "Journey through North America" (1838-'43). He also drew a series of water-colors, reproduced and published in 1836 under the name of "Costumes et personnages indiennes." He resided subsequently in Paris and in Germany, painting pictures of animal life, and etching.
