Lemuel Jackson Bowden

BOWDEN, Lemuel Jackson, senator, born in Williamsburg, Virginia, 16 January 1815; died in Washington, District of Columbia, 2 January 1864. He was graduated at William and Mary, was admitted to the Virginia bar, and became prominent in his profession. He was three times chosen to the state legislature, was a member of the state constitutional conventions of 1849 and 1851, and was a presidential elector in 1860. When the civil war began he remained true to the union, and in the early part of the war his estate suffered much at the hands of the confederate army. When the national troops were at Williamsburg he did a great deal for their comfort, and when a state government was organized for eastern Virginia, in 1863, Mr. Bowden was chosen United States senator.
