GREVYLE, Lord Charles Montague, governor of South Carolina, born 29 May, 1741 ; died in January, 1784. He was the second son of Robert, third Duke of Manchester. He was a knight of the shire of Huntingdon, and at one time governor of Jamaica. From 1766 till 1773 he held the office of governor of South Carolina. During his administration, in 1769, the circuit court law was passed, and courts of justice were established at Ninety-Six, Orangeburg, and Camden. Montague Street, in Charleston, is named for him.
