GODEY, Louis Antoine, publisher, born in New York City, 6 June, 1804 ; died in Philadelphia, 29 November, 1878. He was educated in New York, where for many years he kept a book-store and circulating library. Removing to Philadelphia. he in 1830 founded "Godey's Lady's Book," the first periodical of the kind published, which was continued by him with great success until 1877, when it was sold to a stock company. On retiring from the editorship and proprietorship of the magazine, Mr. Godey remarked that not an immoral thought or profane word could be found in its pages during the entire period of his connection with it. He also published the "Daily Chronicle" newspaper, "Jarvis's Musical Library," and " Young People's Book." Mr. Godey left a fortune of over $1,000,000, acquired entirely from his publications.
