TURREAU DE GARAMBOUVILLE, Louis Marie, Baron de Linieres, French soldier, born in France in 1756; died in Conches, department of the Eure, 15 December, 1816. He entered the army in youth, fought under Count Rochambeau for American independence, and attained the rank of cap-rain. He served as a general of division in Vendee, Italy, and Switzerland, and in 1804 was made a baron. He was minister to the United States in 1804-'11, and vainly attempted to induce the government of this country to adopt a French policy. After his return he published "Apercu sur la situation politique des Etats-Unis" (1815), a bitter critique of the government of the United States, which he says in the preface " the author has studied eight years without being able to comprehend it." Some time before his death he retired to his estate at Conches, in the department of the Eure. He also published "Memoires pour servir a l'histoire de la guerre de la Vendee" (1815).
