WEST, Mary Allen, educator, born in Galesburg, Illinois, 31 July, 1837. She was graduated at Knox seminary, Galesburg, in 1854, and taught till 1873, when site was elected county superintendent. She took an active part in all educational and reformatory movements, was for two years editor of " Our Home Monthly" in Philadelphia, and frequently contributed articles to educational and temperance journals. Miss West's reputation has been established chiefly by her connection with the National and state woman's Christian temperance union, of which she was one of the founders. Miss West has held in the State union the highest posts, and is editor-in-chief of the "Union Signal" in Chicago. She has published "Childhood : its Care and Culture" (Chicago, 1887).
