DUFFEE, Mary Gordon, author, born in Alabalna about 1840. She lives on a lonely mountain in Blount County, Ala., dresses in ancient and eccentric style, and writes under the pseudonym of "Mary Duff Gordon." In May 1874, she delivered the address of welcome to the visiting Press association of New York to Alabama. She has written a series of papers in aid of the development of southern industries, and numerous poems, among which " Cleopatra" is the best known. Miss Duffee is a member of the American historical and biographical society, of the North American geographical society, and the New Orleans academy of sciences, and is also the author of a "History of Alabama," " Guide to the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky," guidebooks to Blount Springs, Ala., and to various interesting places along the southern railways.
