EGAN, Michael, R. C. bishop, born in Ireland ; died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1814. He was educated in Ireland, where he became a priest of the Franciscan order. He came to the United States in 1802, labored as a missionary at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and in 1804 made an unsuccessful attempt to found a province of the Franciscan order in the United States. He was then appointed pastor of St. Mary's Church, Philadelphia. In 1810 he was consecrated bishop of the new diocese of Philadelphia, but was able to do little, owing to the opposition of the trustees of his cathedral, who insisted on having a voice in the selection of their pastors.
