POWER, Michael, Canadian R. C. bishop, born in Halifax, 17 October, 1804; died in Toronto in 1848. He was cure of La Prairie till 1841, when he accompanied Bishop Bouraret to Europe. In the same year the diocese of Kingston was divided, and Dr. Power was nominated bishop of tile western part on 17 May. He was permitted to designate the limits of his see, and to take his episcopal title from the city in which he judged it most advantageous to reside, lie was consecrated on 8 May, 1842, and took the title of bishop of Toronto. He restored to the Jesuits tile missions they had formerly held in Upper Canada, and, owing to his constant support, they established many others.
