STOKES, Montford, senator, born in Wilkes county, North Carolina, in 1760" died in Arkansas in 1842. He served in the United States navy during the war of the Revolution, and after its close removed to Salisbury, North Carolina, where he was for several years clerk of the superior court. He became subsequently clerk of the state senate, and was elected to the United States senate, but declined the office. He was again elected to the same office in 1816, and served till 1823, was a member of the state senate in 1826, and of the state house of representatives in 1829 and 1830. He was governor of North Carolina in 1830-'1, which office he resigned to accept that of commissioner to superintend the removal of the Indians west of Mississippi river. He was appointed by President Jackson in 1831 Indian agent for Arkansas territory, where he remained till his death. He fought a duel near Salisbury with Jesse D. Pierson, and was severely wounded.
