TAYLOR, Moses, merchant, born in New York city, 11 January, 1806. He received a common-school education, became a merchant's clerk at the age of fifteen, and when ten years older embarked in business on his own account. He acquired a large trade with Cuba, and was an extensive ship-owner. In 185,5 he became president of the City bank. During the civil war he was one of the original members of the Union defence committee, and, as chairman of the loan committee of the associated banks, he was instrumental in obtaining subscribers for more than $200,000,000 of government securities. He was one of the originators of submarine telegraphy, and has been an active promoter of important railway lines. Among his charitable gifts was one of $250,000 in 1882 for a hospital for employees of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad, and coal and iron companies at Scranton, Pennsylvania
