LORRAINE, Narcisse Zephrin, Canadian R. C. bishop, born in St. Martin, Lower Canada, 13 June, 1842. He was educated at the Seminary of Sainte Therese, and at Laval University, where he was graduated in 1864 as bachelor of sciences. He was ordained priest on 4 August, 1867, and appointed assistant director of the Seminary of Sainte Therese, which office he held till 15 August, 1869, when he became pastor at the Church of the Assumption at Redford, Clinton County, New York

 

On 3 August, 1880, he was appointed vicar-general of the diocese of Montreal, and on 21 September, 1882, he was consecrated titular bishop of Cythera, and vicar-apostolic of Pontiac, with residence at Pembroke. In 1884 Bishop Lorraine, while on a mission tour, visited the Temiscamingue region and the country around Hudson bay, and traveled about 1,500 miles in a bark canoe.

 

In 1887 he made a pastoral visit to the Indian missions on the upper Ottawa., Rupert's Land, and the upper St. Maurice. During the five years he has been in Pembroke, Bishop Lorraine has paid off a large debt that had encumbered the church, built a fine episcopal residence, and purchased sites for several charitable institutions.
