BROWNSON, Nathan, statesman, died in Liberty County, Georgia, 6 November, 1796. He was graduated at Yale in 1761, studied medicine, and practiced in Liberty County, Georgia he was an early supporter of the patriot cause, was a member of the provincial congress of 1775, and was for some time surgeon in the revolutionary army. He was a delegate to the continental congress in 1776 and 1778, and in 1781, when that body governor of the state chose speaker of the Georgia legislature. He was again speaker in 1788, and president of the state senate in 1789-'91. In 1789 he was a member of the convention that framed the state constitution.
