Nathaniel Portlock

PORTLOCK, Nathaniel, English navigator - Stan Klos Company

PORTLOCK, Nathaniel, English navigator, lived in the 18th century, lie served with Captain Cook in his last voyage to the Pacific ocean, and was given command in 1785 of the " King George," which was sent out from London by the King George's Sound company, a corporation that had been formed for trading in furs from the west coast of North America to China. After various experiences in the Pacific, Captain Portlock brought his vessel back to England in 1788 after making a voyage around the world. Subsequently he wrote "Voyage Around the World : but More Particularly to the Northwest Coast of America" (London, 1789; abridged ed., 1789). His convoy on this expedition was commanded by George Dixon (q. v.).

PORTLOCK, Nathaniel, English navigator - Stan Klos Company

From Laurie Kemp: Captain Portlock did not write the book describing the voyage around the  world. It was George Dixon, the Captain of the Queen Charlotte, which accompanied Portlock on the expedition, who produced it. It consisted of observations made  by his super-cargo (William Beresford) and Dixon's navigational notes, and was published circa 1789 I have seen a copy of the book in the public library back home in Carlisle, Cumbria, UK. I believe that Portlock was in command of the expedition, not Dixon. I thought you might like to know this -- Dixon came from my home county of Cumberland UK.
