ALDRICH, Nelson Wilmarth, senator, born in Foster, Rhode Island, 6 November 1841. He received an academic education, and engaged in mercantile pursuits. He was President of the Providence common council in 1872-'3, a member of the Rhode Island general assembly in 1875-'6, serving in 1876 as speaker of the House of Representatives, and was elected to congress in 1878 and 1880. He was elected to the United States senate as a republican, to succeed General Burnside, and took his seat 5 December 1881.
